What Is A Medical Receptionist?

In a medical clinic or medical facility, it is the medical receptionist that is the first point of contact for patients and the public. Among the primary duties of a medical receptionist are greeting newly arrived patients, obtaining and filing patient information and keeping patient files updated, billing and accepting payments, making appointments, attending to the phone, and some administrative work like data entry and management of medical records.

A high school diploma or GED is already sufficient when applying for a medical receptionist job. However, many employers prefer an applicant who has finished a medical receptionist course because they are equipped with more background technical knowledge about the job. Training and experience are also plus factors if you are applying for the job. There are community colleges that offer certificate programs designed to medical reception work that include specific software applications, organizing and managing the front desk office, and various administrative duties.
